Movement with Rochelle
By Rochelle Carmichael
I have been teaching movement for almost 40 years, both in Australia and overseas.
My journey began as a ballet teacher in England before a personal injury led me to discover Pilates in the 1990s.
What started as part of my own rehabilitation quickly grew into a lifelong passion and career. Over the years, I have owned and managed three Pilates studios and had the privilege of teaching people all over the world from ages 10 to 90.
My work has taken me into many different arenas—supporting corporate teams, professional footballers, golfers, runners, dancers, and singers... No matter who walks through the studio doors, one thing remains the same:
Pilates helps people reconnect with their bodies and discover just how much they’re capable of.
Since moving to this community, I’ve been fortunate to work with locals through group classes and studio sessions—helping with everything from recovery after a stroke to the simple joy of moving more freely in daily life.
Watching clients progress, no matter their starting point, is always deeply rewarding.
Although Yarram may not be a big city, it certainly has a lot to offer when it comes to movement.
You’ll find Pilates, Yoga, Gym, Chair Pilates, and Boxing—and if sport or recreation is more your style, there’s tennis, netball, football, swimming, some boot-scooting dance, cycling, or simply enjoying a walk around our beautiful area.
Whatever you choose, the important part is staying active and finding something that makes you feel good.
If you’re wondering what kind of movement practice might suit you best, start by asking yourself a few simple questions: What type of activity brings me joy? Do I prefer something calming and mindful, or energetic and dynamic? Do I feel better moving on my own, or in a group? Your answers can guide you toward a practice you’ll look forward to—and keep coming back to.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Write in and let me know what aspects of movement, Pilates, or wellbeing you’re most curious about, and I’ll do my best to cover them in future columns.
"And, if in doubt, just breath out."
