Yarram Sets the tone in Windy Round One Win
Yarram tackling was a feature of their win over Sale City.
Yarram senior Coach Brett Mitchell gives his views on his teams round one win
Yarram Demons opened its season in impressive fashion, defeating Sale City in difficult, wind-swept conditions with a disciplined and team-focused performance.
Battling strong winds throughout the contest, Yarram showed composure early, setting up the victory with a crucial first-quarter effort. Kicking three goals against the breeze, the home side laid the foundation for what would become a commanding display.
Coach Brett Mitchell praised his side’s ability to adapt to the conditions from the outset.
“In very windy conditions I thought the team adapted well early in the game and kicking three goals into the wind in the first quarter really set the tone for the day,” Mitchell said.
Yarram’s intensity around the contest proved a standout, with relentless pressure and tackling disrupting Sale City’s ball movement and limiting their scoring opportunities.
“Our pressure and tackling was a real highlight for me, and the team also transitioned well from defence,” Mitchell said.
The defensive unit was particularly dominant, holding Sale City to just a single goal for the entire match in a performance built on structure, communication and accountability.
“It was a very even team performance which I was really happy with, however our defence was really solid restricting Sale City to one goal for the game,” he said.
While pleased with the result, Mitchell acknowledged there are still areas for improvement as the season unfolds.
“There’s still some minor things we need to work on, but it’s always great to get a win in the first round and start the season in a positive way,” he said.
With a strong defensive base, effective ball movement and a willingness to work hard for one another, Yarram has signalled it will be a team to watch early in the season.
