Demons Competitive Before Late Fade Against In-Form Kangaroos

Yarram has shown encouraging signs despite going down to Heyfield by 44 points on the weekend, with a strong three-quarter effort undone by a late fade.

Coming up against one of the competition’s form sides, the Demons matched it with Heyfield for much of the contest before the visitors pulled away in the final term. Yarram coach Brett Mitchell said his side’s effort couldn’t be questioned, particularly through the opening three quarters.

“We were very competitive for three quarters and just ran out of legs in the last quarter,” Mitchell said.

Up forward, Wellesley Jenkins and Kayleb Pearce provided a consistent target, each finishing with four goals in an encouraging display for the Demons. However, Heyfield’s ability to spread the load on the scoreboard with multiple contributors ultimately proved the difference.

Despite the result, Mitchell took plenty of positives from the performance, highlighting a strong team contribution and a midfield group that stood up against quality opposition.

“I thought every player contributed on the day and we probably won the midfield battle,” he said.

Matt Clarvirino, Tyler Chisholm and Pearce were singled out for their efforts, with the trio battling hard across the four quarters.

Looking ahead, the mood within the Yarram camp remains upbeat as they aim to turn competitive performances into wins.

“Morale within the group is very high and with a few players hopefully returning from injury, another win is just around the corner,” Mitchell said.

The challenge doesn’t get any easier this week, with Yarram set to face ladder leaders Cowwarr. Mitchell acknowledged the task ahead but believes his side’s showing against Heyfield provides a blueprint.

“It will be a real challenge this week, but we proved against Heyfield we can be competitive,” he said.

If the Demons can maintain their intensity for four quarters, they may not be far away from causing an upset.
