Wildcats power away after half-time to overwhelm Tigers

Woodside produced a dominant second-half performance to defeat Gormandale by 89 points, 19.22 (136) to 7.5 (47), after overcoming a spirited challenge in the opening half.

Woodside were without their coach Hudson Holmes who was watching from the sidelines as the Tigers came out firing and made the most of their opportunities in front of goal to edge the Wildcats by a single point at quarter-time, leading 4.1 (25) to 3.6 (24).

Woodside responded in the second term, creating plenty of scoring opportunities despite some inaccurate finishing. The Wildcats took a 16-point lead into the main break, 7.12 (54) to 6.2 (38).

From there, the home side took complete control of the contest. Their midfield gained the ascendancy, the pressure lifted and the forwards capitalised as Woodside piled on 12 second-half goals while restricting Gormandale to just one.

Five goals to two in the third quarter stretched the margin to 50 points before the Wildcats finished strongly with seven goals in the final term to seal an emphatic 19.22 (136) to 7.5 (47) victory.

Luke Johnson and Riley Denovan spearheaded the attack with five goals each. They had plenty more opportunites add to their total but were a little wayward at times, while Adam Janssen and Thomas King contributed two majors apiece. James Mattern, Stephen Lambert, Joh Fythe, Diamond Dobson and Rob Michaelides also hit the scoreboard.

Johnson was outstanding and was named Woodside's best player alongside Thomas King, Rob Michaelides, Adam Janssen, Ashton Janssen and Joh Fythe.

For Gormandale, Liam Deering, Campbell Peavey, Peter Strong, Ethan Roscoe, Lucas Nicholls and Tyler Kanara battled hard throughout the afternoon. Chris Wangman, Ethan Roscoe and Lucas Nicholls kicked the Tigers' seven goals between them.
