Yarram cruise to convincing win over Sale City
Yarram produced one of its most complete performances of the season on Saturday, leading at every change en-route to a commanding 13.6 (84) to 7.7 (49) victory over Sale City.
The Demons set the tone early, taking a five-point lead into quarter-time before steadily extending their advantage throughout the afternoon. A disciplined final term sealed the result, with Yarram kicking three unanswered goals while shutting out Sale City completely to close out a 35-point win.
Coach Brett Mitchell said the opening quarter was crucial in shaping the outcome.
"Our first quarter really set the tone for the rest of the match," Mitchell said. "Our pressure was right up and our delivery forward was much improved, with Ben Vardy providing a real focal point at full forward."
Yarram led 4.1 (25) to 3.2 (20) at the first change before pushing the margin out to 15 points by half-time. The Demons carried that composure into the second half, taking a 16-point buffer into the final term before finishing the job in style.
Mitchell praised his side's ability to close out the contest, with Sale City having remained within touch for large periods of the match.
"The team were really composed in the last quarter. We maintained our pressure but, most importantly, kicked early goals which extended our lead," he said. "To Sale City's credit, they never gave up and it was a real contest for most of the game."
Tyler Chisholm was best afield, leading a hardworking Yarram midfield in tricky, slippery conditions, well supported by Kayleb Pearce and Toby Mitchell. Dan Vardy gave the Demons first use out of the ruck, while Lochie Roberts and Owen Gourley were rock-solid in defence whenever Sale City threatened to make inroads.
Up forward, Ben Vardy was the difference, kicking four goals in the first half alone to hand Yarram a scoreboard buffer it would never surrender.
